Our Purpose

Purpose:   The Monroe Vicariate Evangelization & Adult Faith Formation Standing Committee (Committee) exists to assist parishes in their development and operation of Evangelization Committees and to coordinate activities and programs which facilitate this process more effectively at the Vicariate level.  The Committee also exists to coordinate Catechesis among the parishes with particular emphasis on Adult Faith Formation.  Evangelization and formation/ catechesis are inseparable.

Definitions:  To assure consistency in understanding of the meaning of Evangelization and Catechesis the following definitions are offered;

To evangelize is to bear witness, in a simple and direct way, to God revealed by Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit.  Evangelization, then, has different implications depending on our relationship to Jesus and His Church.  For those of us who practice and live our Catholic faith, it is a call to ongoing growth and renewed conversion. For those who have accepted it in name, it is a call to re-evangelization. For those who have stopped practicing their faith, it is a call to reconciliation. For children, it is a call to be formed into disciples, through the family’s faith life and religious education. For other Christians, it is an invitation to know the fullness of our message. For those who have no faith, it is a call to conversion to know Christ Jesus and thus experience a change to new life with Christ and His Church (Go and Make Disciples, 26, 27).

The fundamental task of catechesis is to achieve this objective: the formation of disciples of Jesus Christ. The ministry of catechesis, as an essential moment in the Church’s mission of evangelization, is a fundamental ecclesial service for the realization of the missionary mandate of Jesus (National Directory for Catechesis, 53, 59, 63).

 Goals and Objectives:
Goal #1: To assist the establishment, development and growth of an Evangelization Committee within each parish
Objectives:

  1. Formation of parish members awareness of the Trinity and action of the Holy Spirit in their lives and community
  2. To promote cooperative support between priest, staff and all parishioners in implementing evangelization in the parish
  3. To develop awareness that evangelization is the umbrella under which all parish activities operate

Goal #2: To echo through authentic Catholic teaching the call of Jesus Christ, and to encounter Him in grace through the sacraments, especially the Mass
Objectives:

  1. Formation on encountering Jesus Christ in light of Vatican II
  2. Formation for parents in their essential role of evangelization within their family
  3. Formation to bring a realization that evangelization is the primary responsibility of all baptized persons
  4. Formation to develop a willingness and capacity to be open and vulnerable to the will of God in spreading the Good News

Goal #3: To build up the body of Christ by supporting the dignity of the human person, the importance of family, and the common good of the whole vicariate
Objectives:

    • To promote Pope John Paul II’s call for the unity of the Church
    • To encourage interfaith dialog and prayer as an important aspect of unity within the body of Christ
    • To encourage advocacy of human dignity, family and social justice as an important way of building up the body of Christ
    • To encourage the cultivation of a welcoming community within and outside the parish
